Wayne Rooney believes England’s’Golden Generation’ may have»won everything» if they had worked under a director of Pep Guardiola’s calibre.
Rooney, with 120 caps, stared with England at six tournaments but not progressed past the quarter-final stage.
But he believes a lack of talent was not to instruction as opposed to England record.
«I watch [England] with enthusiasm and pleasure when they are winning,» he told the Wayne Rooney Podcast.
«You take a look at our staff a decade ago and arguably we had the best group of players in soccer.
«Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Ashley Cole, [Steven] Gerrard, [Paul] Scholes, [Frank] Lampard, [David] Beckham, myself, Michael Owen — our team afterward, when we had a Guardiola with this particular group of players, then we would have won whatever, no doubt about it.»
Rooney is the record goalscorer four before Sir Bobby Charlton of England.
However he believes England captain Harry Kane — who has scored 26 goals for England — is still capable of overtaking that record.
«I never take goals for granted, I really like grading them. After I got to 35 for England, I might truly feel that the record becoming close,» Rooney said.
«I really don’t think that it’ll stand for 50 years including Bobby Charlton’s, I think Harry Kane, maybe the subsequent two or three years will… He’s an excellent goalscorer and his album for England is great.
«Once I got the record and then went back for my last game I stated it would be an honour to go and present him like Bobby Charlton presented me with the golden boot and I’m sure it won’t be before long.»
